VIDEOS: Happy Birthday DJ AM

Happy Birthday to one of the greatest DJs ever Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein he is definitely missed. Check out this tribute video that VJ Chris Landry made of DJ AM’s Elton 4 mix. Also be sure to listen and download some of DJ AM’s other mixes HERE

VJ CHRIS LANDRY -

“I believe DJ AM to be the greatest DJ of all time and I’ve been around all the greats. The Elton series of mixtapes, there are 5 of them, help to showcase why he is the greatest: bold selections, incredible cuts, flawless mixing, amazing creativity and more. There is nobody that can name all of these songs on this mix.(Track listing below) Some are well known, others hidden gems that AM gave light to here.Listen closely to the transitions. Besides nasty cuts there are subtle loops that go for a long time and other small touches that really make the mix. Touches like 50 min in when he plays New Order the next 4 songs are all 16th notes on the high hat. Listen for the subtleties.

I believe these mixes to be live in one take and not a work of ableton. I am also told that Am made these mixes as a collection of his favorite songs to listen to while driving around. Thus the vibe is very different from a club set.

I hope this video mixtape will compliment and help shine a light not only on AMs incredible skills and legacy but also to the artists on this mix that have not received proper shine.

Dubset asked me to do this video mix for a party in LA where they were doing an AM tribute. I was given 5 days to complete it. I have listened to all the Elton mixes countless times and still discover subtle facets of AM’s genius. I hope you will appreciate the added video element to this masterpiece of a mix and if you do please share it.”

MUSIC: Program Your 808: A Visual Representation Of Some Of The Most Notable Drum Sequences In EDM History

Photobucket

“This series of four posters, dubbed “Program Your 808” is coming from Birmingham-based graphic designer, Rob Ricketts. The posters don’t just look pretty they’re actually functional. Ricketts’ idea was to detail how some of the most notable drum sequences (Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock,” Cybotron’s “Clear,” A Guy Called Gerald’s “Voodoo Ray” and “No Way Back” by Adonis) were programmed using the Roland TR-808 Drum Machine. Each sequence has been analyzed and represented as to allow you, the user, to re-program each sequence, key for key. Pretty dope.” [via Magnetic Mag]

VIDEO: Jay E- 2012 WMC VJ Challenge Winning Set

ScreenWerks returned with a vengence to the annual Winter Music Conference VJ Challenge in Miami and walked away with the top prize: the 1st Place World Championship! Jay E had the beachfront arena rocking with a throwback-style set full of funky breaks, chunky cuts and classic movie clips. While most of the competitors stayed predictably in the electro-house/top-40 realm, Jay intentionally brought it back to the soulful roots, impressing the judges with creative edits, seamless rhythms and undeniable turntable skill. Our close friend DJ Costik took 2nd (no 3rd place was awarded this year), so it was a clean sweep for the ScreenWerks fam who had driven in from St Louis to compete. Jay and Costik collected Pioneer hardware for their efforts, the acclaim of their peers, and the satisfaction of bringing the World Championship Video DJ title to its proper home.

Equipment Used: Technics 1200 Turntables, Pioneer DJM 900 Mixer, Mix Emergency for video, Rane Serato for audio

Videographer: Ali Rafiq

NEWS: Serato Video 1.0 Released

Based on the popular Video-SL plug-in, Serato Video now gives ITCH DJs video mixing tools that Serato Scratch Live DJs have enjoyed for years, with the use of supported ITCH controllers. Scratch Live DJs can use the same tools with their choice of turntable or CDJ control.

With a reworked architecture, Serato DJs can experience an even smoother workflow and greater flexibility when using effects and transitions to amplify video mixes, at home, in the club or on-stage.

Serato Video is a free update for all current owners of Video-SL.

What does it do?

- Add video clips to your Scratch Live or ITCH performance.

- View loaded clips and output from your computer.

- Manipulate playback with Serato control records, CDs or with your ITCH controller of choice.

- Use built in transitions and effects including text and image effects.

- Enrich your set with audio responsive effects, including bass zoom and splits, that are controlled by analyzing the music signal.

- Preview and manage video files in both the ITCH and Scratch Live offline players.

- Use Video Instant Doubles to play the same video and effects on a second deck.

- Store effects within each video file for instant recall.

- Setup different output configurations (Output Only, L/R prefader or all 3 outputs) for greater flexibility when video mixing externally.

- Utilize 3rd party controllers with Serato Video’s MIDI control in Scratch Live.

NEWS: Mix Emergency 2.0 Released

MixEmergency 2.0 has arrived!

Hamilton, New Zealand – March 27, 2012:

Inklen is excited to announce the release of MixEmergency 2.0. Since its first release in 2008, MixEmergency has quickly established itself as one of the leaders in the Video DJing industry – and as the software of choice for many of the world’s top Video DJs. Now, with MixEmergency 2.0, Inklen continues to lead the way, helping to push boundaries for Video DJs. “For 2.0, we’ve focused on effects, as well as much needed features for the expanding requirements of working Video DJs.” says Nick Feisst, Director of Inklen. “A huge amount of work has gone into MixEmergency 2.0 – I think a lot of Video DJs will regard it as setting the standard for Video DJing software from today.”

MixEmergency 2.0 opens the door for beat-synced effects, transitions, and Quartz Compositions. These components stay perfectly synced to the currently playing audio beat, thus increasing the impact of visuals and the cohesion between audio and video. Effect and transition plug-ins, that take advantage of this system, will be released for download over the coming months on the MixEmergency website.

MixEmergency’s new Automatic Border Fill feature allows users to fill any empty areas around their videos with one of several effects. This means that if a 4:3 video is played on a 16:9 screen, then there no longer have to be empty areas at the sides. Previously, Video DJs would have had to edit their videos to add border effects (which is time consuming), or crop or stretch the video to fit within the screen (which looks bad).

New in MixEmergency 2.0:

- Added Blend Modes for effects.

- Added Grid/BPM control mode for effects and transitions.

- Added automatic border-fill overlays.

- Added MIDI output.

- Added video camera input as an overlay.

- Added effect and transition change notification system.

- Added Advanced Output options (with basic projection mapping and output size control).

- Added pop-up editor for the effect Mapping Graphs.

- Quartz Composition Overlays can now be saved and triggered as presets.

- Added layer/shift modifiers for MIDI controls.

…and much more!

A full list of changes can be found on their WEBSITE.
