Sampling has been a huge part of music for the last couple decades. Back in the 1970s, DJs experimented with manipulating vinyl on two turntables and gave birth to hip hop music, the first popular music genre based originally around the art of sampling. Which leads us to today’s music where sampling in hip hop and electronic music is still widely used to create a hit. For instance Avicii & Flo Rida’s use of Etta James’ “Something’s Got A Hold On Me.” or Big Sean “Dance A$$” use of Mc Hammer – “Can’t Touch This” which in turn sampled Rick James’ “Super Freak”. A great reference website that every DJ should have bookmarked is WhoSampled.com. If you’ve ever wondered where your favorite artist got inspiration for the song that made them famous that should be your first stop.

We are starting a new piece called Who Sampled where every week we will highlight some of today’s biggest hits and songs of the past and show the original that came first. All songs and edit’s will be available for download here on DMS. After the jump check out this weeks Who Sampled highlights.
