Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Netflix series The Get Down, which follows a group of young musicians, graffiti artists and dancers in the Bronx in the late Seventies, chronicles the simultaneous rise of hip-hop, disco and punk within the New York art scene. The music-driven drama’s lengthy first trailer previews that invigorating hodgepodge with shots of stage performances, nightclub shootouts and artists struggling to hone their crafts.

“The pale-faced media tells us we’re all going to hell,” goes the opening narration. “But maybe we just the first ones to light the fire. I’m trying to snuff it out, but that’s like oxygen to a flame.”

The trailer glimpses the show’s disparate cast, which includes Jimmy Smits, Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Shameik Moore, and features a standout scene where groundbreaking DJ Grandmaster Flash (Mamoudou Athie) schools his young crew on “Universal DJ Rule 17”: “In order to fly, a DJ must trust his wings.”
